About Kirtan

Come participate in an expression of collective joy in music. It is easy to learn and profoundly beautiful.

What is kirtan?
Kirtan is a transformational and sacred musical event.
Traditional kirtan follows a "call-and-response" format: musicians sing a verse, audience sings it back. The songs go back and forth, over and over, for 20-40 minutes, creating a meditative-like experience for all. Absolutely no prior experience is needed to participate. We encourage anyone who has never been to a kirtan to attend one soon. Kirtan is very easy to follow and really fun to do. People of all ages, young and old love this format. If you love music, singing and beautiful sound you just might discover that you like this too.

What are the benefits?
On an emotional level, when we repeat sacred syllables, words or verses all accumulated negativity is washed away, the heart opens up and you feel calm, refreshed and happy. On a physical level, the vibration of each sound acts to clear away blockages in the cells and tissues. These sacred sounds revitalize the cells just like when you recharge a battery or refresh a webpage.

Some bands chant mostly in Sanskrit (the language of yoga), other bands mix it up with an eclectic blend of chants from a variety of traditions and cultures. We'll let you know, what style the current band favors.

We offer a sliding scale for all kirtan events, ranging from $30-15/person. We never turn anyone away for lack of funds. Please let us know if your finances are truly limited. Please RSVP. We do not sell advance tickets. You may pay at the door, first come basis.
